Replacing coal with torrefied biomass
Torrefied Wood, a Bio-Energy Option That is Ready to Go
Worldbiofuels Markets News, March 10, 2010
Torrefaction is a proven technology that is on the cusp of being scaled up to commercially viable levels. And torrefaction is significantly less capital intensive as biorefining and the costs of producing TW on a commercial scale is relatively low. [Read more...]
Boardman coal-burning plant may have a future after all: biomass
OregonLive.com, January 31, 2010
Portland General Electric isn't the only utility considering replacing some of their coal with plant material, but they are among the few thinking about doing away with coal entirely using biomass, said Christopher Wright, a research engineer and biomass energy specialist at Idaho National Laboratory. "In that regard, they are on the forefront of that thinking when we look out on the landscape," Wright said... [Read more]

Bioenergy and Greenhouse Gases
White Paper by Gregory Morris, Ph.D., Pacific Institute May 2008
Bioenergy production reduces atmospheric greenhouse-gas levels by enhancing long-term forest-carbon sequestration and by reducing the greenhouse-gas potency of the carbon gases associated with the return of biomass carbon to the atmosphere that is an intrinsic part of the global carbon cycle. These greenhouse-gas benefits are provided in addition to the benefit common to all renewable energy production of avoiding the use of fossil fuels. The value of the greenhouse-gas offsets that are expected to become available in the next several years should improve the competitiveness of energy production from biomass and biogas resources in the marketplace of the future...
